Traditional Thai yoga massage has a long history of therapeutic healing. But if you trace the evolution of the technique of massage practiced in Thailand, you discover that in fact the earliest roots of Thai massage lie not in Thailand but in India.

The legendary founder of the art is believed to have been an Ayurvedic Doctor from northern India, known as Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha, he was a contemporary of the Buddha and a personal physician to many of the famous Kings over 3,000 years ago.

The teachings of Kumar Bhaccha probably reached what is now Thailand at the same time as the spread of Buddhism.

In the mid 80's, around the time when Asokananda got fascinated by and 'hooked' on Thai Massage, Thai massage had seemed to be a dying art. Chemical drugs had replaced home remedies and traditional cures and Thai massage had sunk to the point of being regarded as quack practice.

The picture changed considerably in the late 80's. The limits of Western medicine became apparent, bringing about a revival of interest in alternative health care in Thailand and other countries of the East.

All of a sudden Westerners in search of alternative ways of healing discovered Thai massage. Doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and masseurs on one hand, and people with a background in yoga, yoga therapy and meditation on the other hand, came to Thailand to supplement their knowledge with a training in traditional Thai massage.

So within one decade Thai massage has regained the credibility it rightly deserves and not only has Thai massage survived but it has thrived!

More than our teacher. More than our friend. Asokananda died on Friday, 24 June 2005.Deeply respected for his spiritual life, studies and teachings, we wish his light will forever stay with us. Through each massage we give, every student we teach, we will always be thankful for what he simply allowed us to discover and share, everyday.
